Lurker buys 91 M30.

Post by Boosted 70z » Sun Aug 12, 2007 9:56 pm

Hello guys, I've been lurking here since the old forums but just now got my hands on an M30. Shes a 91 with 114k miles. I picked her up for $300 from a kid who needed a reliable car. She runs but overheats quickly so I figured at worst I'd have to replace the motor. The body is in decent shape just a few dime sized dings and the bumper is a little warped and missing paint. I plan on going full drift set up once I get her running good. And eventually I will drop a vh45 into her.

Welcome to the world of owning an M30 :).

In regards to the overheating, did you thoroughly check the cooling system? When I got my M30, nobody could figure out why it was overheating so badly, but then I found a dead rat splattered all over the radiator  .

It looks pretty clean to me. How does it run, aside from the overheating?

I doubt the overheating is being caused by a blocked radiator. When I cranked it I could smell coolant. I'm thinking it may be the head gasket. I haven't had time to work on it though, I have two other cars that I'm always working on. I bought this on an impulse, the price and location was right and I couldn't pass it up. I have to get my all trac running before I can tackle the M30.

Easily. The heat (exhaust) cant be removed properly making the internal temp in the combustion chamb rise considerably high thus overheating the engine.

That or most likely a loose hose to the radiator. Maybe the upper or lower hose is leaking it. You should tighten the clamps.

Does your coolant leak out at all?

I had to recently replace my water pump and thermostat, and no more overheating for me.

I rally haven't had any time to work on this car. But the previous owner said he replaced the water pump and thermostat. I'll find out when I actually get time.

Well I got a few minutes to look the car over and I noticed that the upper radiator hose was loose. When I pulled it off completely I found that at least half of the flange on the radiator was gone. I'm thinking that those plastic pieces might have gone in and damaged the water pump too. So I guess I need a new radiator, a cooling system flush, and maybe a new water pump.
