2.0 - F31roger

Post by f31clubadmin » Mon Nov 07, 2016 6:40 pm

I've been keeping it a secret on Facebook, but I think it is safe on f31club.

Once I got back from Japan, I was now looking for an M30. I had bought parts and was looking to get back into it.

The distant relative of my wife who took over my old M30 has been MIA. The agreement was that if I wanted the car back, he would resell it to me (even if he added a couple hundred bucks to the price I sold it to him for). Before I went to Hawaii, there was some rumor that the M30 got damaged by hitting a curb. I don't know if that as from drunk driving or what the issue is.. but the fact my wife can't locate him is all red flags (but he's not dead, possibly in jail).

So I ruled out that M30 (with much sadness)! Anyways, I was looking at options and of course people want a good chunk of change for some M30s that were hurting, either interiorly, mechanic wise or exteriorly. Something was wrong. I did not want a vert just yet too. SlappinM30 offered his M30, which I was thinking heavily on, it is a running project and he would give me a good price on it. My wife said no more projects when we talked about it.

I looked at Craigslist and saw that there was a pretty clean one in Oregon. $2900, 2nd owner (adult owned) and pretty stock.

I called the owner up and committed to buying it. He said he would hold it for me when I sent him my flight info. I was trying to go that weekend, but the my wife booked a flight 2 weeks later. Would email him every other day saying I am not flaking out.

Finally it was the weekend! I flew up on Saturday (11.12.16) to PDX. He picked me up and we went straight to the bank. Gave him cash and we went back to his place. Test drove it, looked over everything, noted the deficits of the M30 and realized it is probably the cleanest one I've seen in a while. 142, 000 miles with a straight body and clean interior.
Typical issues with climate control, dash warp, small stress fracture in chassis on driver's side, typical seat rips.

The amazing things:
They documented everything they did.

They had an issue that when it rained, the car would cut out. He spent a good $3000 trying to find the problem which included tons of new parts (like injectors) thinking it was fuel related. What had happened was that water would drip down the passenger side and reach the ECU. After the mechanical changes and diagnostics, they took it to an electrical specialist and found that the water would reach the ECU shortening it out. So new ECU.

Before I left, the wife asked to take pictures of her 1 last time, so we spent 10mins doing that. He took me to his garage and had a box of extra stuff ( unused gaskets, injectors, the chrome center caps, 1 was bad, tire chains, wheel lock key...

While I was planning to meet with Jay, it was a good at least 8hr drive back to San Francisco.

I knew when after I got back from Hawaii, I needed to get f31club going and get an M30. This was reinforced in Japan

When I was at Carshop Friend, I went to the storage part of the garage and saw tons of parts.. a lot of stock and saved parts. Mouldings, fenders, sun visors...

Then I saw a shelf full of gauge clusters.
csfclusters.jpg

I didn't ask about the cost until I left Japan. Satoru told me Mr. Kanazawa reserves these for his customers and so they get priority. But $1000 if I wanted one.

Luckily, one popped up yesterday and was priced at $300. I couldn't pass it up. I have one at my parents house, but everything there is storaged and I am not depending on those parts right now.

So I picked this one up.

From what was in the description, this one doesn't have a boost gauge (which is located on the bottom).

I spent some time with the previous owners and took pictures. We went over somethings. I then started to head out.

I stopped by Tigard (just outside of Portland) and met with Jay. We talked for a good long time and took pictures (look in the meet section). I then started to head south.

8hrs was going to grueling!

Mark aka Strikevalk hit me up and talked on the phone with me! Thanks brother. Was totally bored and would have slept at a rest area had it not been for our conversation.

Sunday morning was like Christmas.

My wife had planned to go to the Peninsula and get stuff, so it was perfect to drive my family with the M30. I also had homework for History class (yes, I'm a student still LOL) due at midnight.

I opened my storage and got out the parts.

Did a crappy mock up. I realized I needed to take off the mud flaps.

she's a beauty right there man! Like I said, via our FB conversations.... try mocking the car with just the front lip... minus the skirts and rears... that's the classic look :)

Here is my immediate plan. There some dents here and there, so I'm going to have a paintless dent repair person fix those.

On both sides of the door molding, there are some spots that need touch up paint.
I am also getting the front fender molding with emblems, so those gotta be painted.
The top of the rear bumper is showing some fading, so I will paint that as well.
As for the kit, I'll paint it all. I do like that front lip only, but since it is all being painted, I mind as well.

The spoiler has to go. I wouldn't mind getting some kind of lip spoiler, nothing to flashy, but goes with the body. might have to look at the 88 maxima lip wing. I've seen these in the junkyard and wondered if it would look nice on an M30.

Chris (from the So Cal meet) had a volvo or saab spoiler which looked really clean.

So I have my rear sun shade coming.

I never understood how it is installed, but I noticed that there are 2 rods. So I asked Hirohisa about it and he posted something that gives me an idea.

Surprisingly the trunk switch and passenger side vent are in great functioning condition.

So here are some of the deficits:
  • 1. Ripped leather seats, moreso on the driver side and rear seat tops and a bit on the passenger side seat.

Fixed 2. Speedometer gauge is wacked (new speed sensor needed)
    20161112_200257.jpg
    3. Dash warp
    20161116_185723.jpg
Fixed4. Digital climate control display (on and off) and same with fan speed)
    20161121_175303.jpg
    5. Antenna does not go up.
    20161117_085718.jpg
    6. Left rear side window, rubber seal coming off
    20161118_132130.jpg
    7. Chassis crack - driver side only

Fixed8. Driver side window switch for passenger side intermittently works
    20161117_075850.jpg
    9. Misc. small dents here.. nothing major.

    10. Scuffs on the side molding, mainly on the left side.
    20161116_085807.jpg
    20161116_085759.jpg

    11. Top of rear bumper is faded a bit.
    20161116_085745.jpg

Fixed12. Hideous wing needs to go.
    20161116_085747.jpg

fixed13. Passenger side map light doesn't come on.

replaced14. Driver side seat belt shredded.
    20161117_075843.jpg
It could be worst, but it is the reason why I paid the higher price for this vehicle.. the same is actually pretty good, it is clean.. and the motor runs smooth and responsive.

The first of the goodies came yesterday.

This is the digital gauge cluster... sadly, the pig tails did not come with it! So I am emailing the buyee and seller.
20161121_180140.jpg
20161121_180144.jpg

Well, it is what it is. I send messages to Osamu, Hideya, Satoshi, Makoto and a few others. They are checking, but I might be able to get some.

I went to my storage unit and looked at my z31 and U11 digital gauge cluster.. found out that the U11 had plugs that fit the F31 cluster!!!

Additionally, I wanted to do a few things for my f31 to kinda upgrade it.

While I do have that zenki digital cluster (this is my 2nd one) I am hoping to use it.

Additionally and this is probably kinda 80's nerdish, but I also have a audible warning system from a U11 Maxima.
I still have to find the wiring sequence and I know the guy from Jalopnik posted one for the 810 Maxima.
20161121_190031.jpg
And to keep up with modern times, I'd like to hardwire some USB ports for charging phones.

So went for a smog and everything passed except visual test. The cat did not have numbers stamped on it.

So per Cali law, it has to have numbers stamped.

So i had to go out and get a cat that was right.

aside from the family/school/work.

Figured these out and putting on.

I gotta fiberglass the side skirts again. My aim is to get the aero mounted and maybe some spray paint. I want to take pix this weekend.
